3D Printing in Constructions – Fall 2019
Background
3D Printing in construction applications, such as building systems and architectural objects, is an emerging field, which looks at the possibility of enhancing customization, material savings, economic benefits, increased performance in architecture. The technology supporting additive constructions has evolved rapidly in the last five years, as a result of an academic and industrial effort at an international level. Several start-ups internationally are currently entering the market, pushing for technology and application developments. The technical and market possibilities are evidently large, as global human population is increasing, we have an expected growth in the numbers of buildings needed every year. 3D Printing is an ideal solution to many of the challenges that comes with it.
core questions
CREATE is interested in understanding:
+ What is the current market for such technology, and where can we expect market possibilities in the next 5 years?
+ What are the possible applications, their existing limitations?
+ What are the existing technologies and which one is the most viable for application in buildings?
+ What is the main challenge or bottleneck that companies are now experiencing?
+ What are the technological solutions for improving applications in construction?
+ What are the realistic and or visionary innovation processes we need to start to make the technology used in constructions?
+ What is the next step to take then (finding it, and developing a new concept for it)?
existing constraints
+ Material Performance: 3D Printing technology at large scale have still material limitations
+ Building Codes: we still do not have standards for calculation and performance evaluation for 3D printed objects
+ Construction Technology: 3D printing require us to rethink construction systems such as load bearing structures and vertical partitions
+ Design for 3D printing: given the above mentioned constraints, we need to explore design implications that make the use of 3D printing effective technically and economically
